Overview
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure where breast implants or fat from one's own body is used to increase the size and change the shape of your breasts. As simple as it sounds, understanding this procedure in detail is essential.
Types of Breast Augmentation Surgery
It can be done either through fat transfer or breast implants. It is further divided into different types based on how you want the breasts to look and feel.
- Breast implants are filled with sterile saline. It is safe because if the implant breaks, the saline is easily dissolved in the body without causing harm. They are used by very few surgeons as they give an unnatural feel.
- Structured saline implants have an inner structure that is provided to make the breasts feel normal. These implants give advantages to both saline and silicone implants but are not popular because of disadvantages.
- Silicone implants are another variety of implants. They are made out of silicone gel. If they break, the silicone could be toxic to the body. Persons with this condition must visit their surgeons regularly for a check-up.
- Gummy bear implants are made of silicone gel but of a firmer type. When broken, it remains intact. The disadvantage is that it needs a longer skin incision.
- Smooth breast implants, as the name implies, are the softest. They make breast movement look more natural than with other implants.
- Micro/Nano textured implants are most commonly used for today.
- Textured breast implants are the type of implants that form scar tissue around the implant to make it adhere to the breast. The breasts feel more firm. In fat transfer breast augmentation, the surgeon draws fat from one's own body and injects it into the breast. Fat can be removed from the belly, sides, and back of the stomach, thighs, and back. This is an alternative to implants if someone does not want to carry foreign material outside their body. This procedure is becoming more and more popular these days as this does not carry any risk. This is also called autologous breast augmentation. We use latest and most advanced "Beauli Technique" for this operation.
Why Do People Get Breast Augmentation Done?
There are many reasons why breast augmentation is done. Some reasons are:

Breast Augmentation Surgery Procedure
Before Breast Augmentation Surgery
This step involves meeting a plastic surgeon. During this consultation, you discuss your needs and the different options suggested by the surgeon. Remember that you are not attempting to perfect your breasts but rather to improve on them. You must be in a sound mental and physical state of health while deciding.
During this visit, the surgeon will understand your past medical history, present health status, ask about specific habits, and perform an extensive physical examination.
It is also important to make sure you meet a state-certified plastic surgeon.
During Breast Augmentation Surgery
The first step in the surgery is to induce anaesthesia. After you fall asleep, the doctor will make a cut in the breast area. This depends on how and where the implant or fat is to be placed. There are different types of cuts, depending on the surgeon. After this, the implant or fat tissue is placed, and the cut is closed with the help of stitches.
After Breast Augmentation Surgery
After the surgery, you will be taken to the observation room, where you will be monitored for the next 24 hours.
After you are well-oriented, the surgeon will provide you with medications and instructions. You will be placed on periodic recall until you have completed your full recovery. Sometimes drain tubes are placed for the fluids to drain; in such cases, the patient is to return every few days to get them changed. Stitches are removed in about a week. No heavy exercise or lifting should be done for four weeks after surgery. Physical activities can be resumed after approximately six weeks unless there are other complications.
Complications of Breast Augmentation Surgery
Every surgical procedure has side effects. Some side effects of breast augmentation surgery are listed below.
Immediate complications after surgery:
- Pain and soreness
- Bleeding
- Swelling
- Infection
- Decreased speed of wound healing
- Blood collection in the area due to improper draining
Delayed complications after surgery:
- Scar formation
- Implants may sag
- Implant may break
- Cancer
Breast augmentation procedures do not last a lifetime. Surgeries may need to be repeated to replace the implants or remove them. Hence it is important to undergo these procedures thoughtfully, as reversal would mean going under the knives again. Pregnancy, weight loss, and menopause can affect how the implants appear. Also, it is important to choose an experienced board-certified doctor to perform these procedures. Lastly, breast augmentations can affect self-examination and breast mammograms to detect cancer.
