Common ENT Conditions

Ear Conditions

The ear is a delicate organ sensitive to various conditions affecting hearing and balance. Common ear conditions include:

  • Ear infections: Often occurring in children, ear infections can cause pain, fever, and hearing problems. They are typically treated with antibiotics or, in severe cases, surgical intervention.
  • Hearing loss: This can be due to ageing, exposure to loud noises, or infections. Audiologists work closely with ENT specialists to diagnose and manage hearing loss, often recommending hearing aids or other assistive devices.
  • Tinnitus: A persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears, tinnitus can be distressing. It is often a symptom of underlying conditions like hearing loss or ear infections and requires comprehensive evaluation by an ENT specialist.

Nose Conditions

Nasal health is crucial for proper breathing and overall well-being. Common nose conditions include:

  • Sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinuses, often resulting from infections or allergies, can cause headaches, facial pain, and nasal congestion. Chronic sinusitis may require surgical intervention.
  • Nasal polyps: These non-cancerous formations in the nasal passages may block airflow and lead to breathing problems. Treatment can involve medication or the surgical removal of the polyps.
  • Allergies: Nasal allergies, triggered by pollen, dust, or other irritants, can lead to persistent sneezing, runny nose, and itching. Managing these symptoms often involves allergen avoidance, medications, or allergy shots.

Throat Conditions

The throat is vital for speaking, swallowing, and breathing, making it susceptible to various conditions:

  • Sore throat: A common complaint, often caused by viral infections, sore throat can be a symptom of more serious conditions like strep throat or tonsillitis.
  • Tonsillitis: Inflammation of the tonsils, often due to infection, can cause severe throat pain, difficulty swallowing, and fever. Tonsillectomy may be recommended for recurrent cases.
  • Voice disorders: Problems with the vocal cords can lead to hoarseness or loss of voice. These conditions are often treated with voice therapy or, in some cases, surgery.

ENT Treatments and Procedures

Diagnostic Procedures

Proper diagnosis is the first step in effective ENT treatment. Common diagnostic tools and procedures include:

  • Audiometry: This hearing test helps diagnose hearing loss and other auditory issues. It is a simple, non-invasive procedure performed by an audiologist.
  • Endoscopy: ENT specialists use endoscopy to visualise the inside of the nose, throat, and sinuses. This procedure is essential for diagnosing conditions like sinusitis, nasal polyps, and throat cancers.

Surgical Treatments

When medication and non-invasive treatments are not enough, surgery may be required:

  • Tonsillectomy: This common surgery involves removing the tonsils, usually due to chronic tonsillitis. It is typically performed on children but may be necessary for adults in certain cases.
  • Septoplasty: Surgery to correct a deviated septum, which can cause breathing difficulties and chronic sinusitis. This procedure helps improve airflow through the nasal passages.
  • Rhinoplasty: Though often associated with cosmetic surgery, rhinoplasty can also be functional, correcting structural issues to improve breathing.

Non-Surgical Treatments

Many ENT conditions can be effectively managed without surgery:

  • Medications: Antibiotics, antihistamines, and decongestants are commonly prescribed to treat infections, allergies, and other ENT conditions.
  • Speech therapy: Speech therapy is often recommended for voice disorders to help patients regain normal vocal function.
  • Hearing aids: Hearing aids can improve the quality of life for those with hearing loss by improving their ability to perceive sounds.

Cochlear Implant

Cochlear Implant is a small complex device that improves the hearing ability of individuals who are profoundly deaf or those who find it very difficult to hear. A cochlear implant bypasses the part of the ear that is damaged to send the voice, unlike hearing aids which amplify the sound. A cochlear implant consists of an external piece consisting of a microphone, sound processor and transmitter that are placed behind the ear and an internal piece consisting of electrodes that are accommodated within the ear.

Preparation of procedure

Before the surgery, your doctor will examine your external, middle and internal ear for any abnormality.

The doctor may advise certain tests such as audiograms, CT scans, and MRI.

Procedure

The surgeon makes an incision to expose the mastoid bone.

The surgeon then makes an incision in the cochlea (spiral bone in the inner ear) to insert an electrode array into the cochlea.

The receiver is placed behind the ear, and the incision is closed.

Follow up

The patient needs to visit the hospital after 1 week for the removal of the external bandage. The follow-up appointment is meant to check the functioning of the cochlear implant and to evaluate the frequency of future appointments.

Comprehensive Services

Cochlear Implants

Deafness is the loss of the ability to hear normally. There are two types of deafness - conductive and sensori-neural. These can occur separately or together when it is called mixed loss, and one (unilateral) or both ears (bilateral) may be involved to varying degrees from mild to profound. Most cases of nerve deafness don’t respond to treatment and may only be helped with hearing Aids or Cochlear Implants.

Cochlear Implant Unit at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital is among the country’s largest centres for this kind of treatment. Along with Cochlear Implants, BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital is Asia’s second centre to have regularly started Auditory BrainStem Implant Surgery for congenital Aplasia of the Auditory Nerve and in conditions of the Cochlea where Cochlear Implantation is not possible.

The Voice Lab

Voice Lab at BLK-Max super speciality hospital is state of the art and advanced suite for diagnosis and office-based procedures related to voice disorders.

This suite consists of

  • Laryngeal endoscopy, using flexible or rigid Hopkin's endoscopes
  • Flexible Nasopharyngo-laryngoscope with a chip on tip technology
  • Stroboscopy
  • Facilities for the following procedures are available in the voice lab.

Diagnostic Procedures

Hopkins's diagnostic Laryngoscopy and Video Laryngoscopy - Laryngeal video-endoscopy provides information about vocal fold structure and gross function and anomalies, if any. It is used to diagnose and document voice and laryngeal disorders, plan treatment, make longitudinal comparisons, educate patients, and provide biofeedback for voice and breathing therapy. It is very useful to record the video and still images in the documentation for routine follow-up.

Video Stroboscopy - Video-stroboscopy is a state-of-the-art technique that provides a magnified, slow-motion view of the vocal cord vibration. Minute vocal fold lesions which are hitherto not appreciable by normal mirror/ video laryngoscopic examination are easily diagnosed, enabling the laryngologist to plan treatment accordingly.

Therapeutic Procedures

Video-assisted injection laryngoplasty - Injection medialization laryngoplasty is a procedure by which bio-compatible filler material is injected into a vocal fold that lacks either the bulk (such as in vocal fold bowing) or the mobility (such as in vocal fold palsy).

Video-assisted laryngeal Botox injection - In Spasmodic dysphonia, Inj Botox Type A can be injected into the vocal folds accurately under video-laryngoscopic control.

Office-based Phono-surgical procedures - Small nodules or polyps of Vocal folds can be excised under local anesthesia under video laryngoscopic control as an outpatient procedure.
